If you run a business in Serbia, you have almost certainly heard someone say-or thought it yourself-“I already have Instagram. Why would I need a website?”
We understand the logic. Instagram is free, easy to use and everyone is on it. So why invest in a website?
The answer is not simply “because you should”. It lies in what Instagram can and cannot do for your business.
What Instagram really is
Instagram is an excellent platform for building a community, staying in touch with followers every day and showing your work through visual content. For many businesses, it is an essential part of the marketing mix.
But Instagram is, above all, someone else’s platform. You are a tenant there, not the owner.
Five things Instagram cannot do in place of a website
1. You cannot control how you look
On Instagram, everyone looks the same-the same format, the same grid, the same options. You cannot adapt your profile to your brand, organize information the way you want or set yourself apart visually from competitors.
A website gives you complete freedom to present your business exactly as you want-with your colours, your story and your structure.
2. Search engines struggle to find you
This may be the most important difference. When someone in your town searches Google for “hairdresser Stara Pazova”, “air-conditioning repair Belgrade” or “flower delivery Novi Sad”, an Instagram profile is unlikely to appear among the results.
Local searches are dominated by websites and Google Business Profiles; an Instagram profile may show up when someone searches for your exact name, but rarely when they search for the service you offer. Without a website, you are practically invisible to everyone who looks for a business like yours through a search engine-and that is a great many people every day.
3. An algorithm decides who sees you
On Instagram, the reach of your posts depends on an algorithm that changes without warning. You may have 5,000 followers, yet a post reaches only a few hundred of them-and only if the algorithm favours it.
On your website, everyone who arrives sees everything. No filter, no algorithm, no limits.
4. You cannot build trust in the same way
Imagine you are looking for a dentist, a lawyer or a contractor to renovate your flat. Would you trust someone with only an Instagram profile, or someone with a professional website that offers clear information, references and contact details?
A website sends a signal: this business is serious, stable and here for the long term.
5. You can lose everything overnight
An Instagram account can be hacked, suspended or deleted-without warning and often with little chance of a successful appeal. Some businesses have lost profiles with tens of thousands of followers, and years of work, in a single moment.
Your website belongs to you. Nobody can take it away.
Instagram and a website-it does not have to be one or the other
The point is not to leave Instagram. The point is that Instagram and a website play different roles:
Instagram builds awareness, attracts attention and keeps you in touch with existing followers.
A website turns interested visitors into customers-it gives them all the information they need, builds trust and lets them contact you or buy from you.
Together, they work far better than either does alone.
If you already sell products through Instagram, check the legal side too. When you need a registered business, how fiscal receipts work and what customers can return is covered in our guide to selling on Instagram in Serbia.
Conclusion
An Instagram page is an excellent tool-but it is not a substitute for a website. If your entire online presence relies on social media alone, part of the job is left unfinished.
A website that works for you is not a luxury. It is the foundation of a serious online presence.
